Originally, the concept behind this song was to explore how life/society/culture gives people goals that don’t always align with who they are on an individual level. The problem derived from this: people break their backs following dreams they are not certain they truly want, and simply follow them blindly. This song was inspired by David Foster Wallace’s text, where he speaks of the importance of questioning and guiding our thoughts and desires. In the song, the main character is rowing against the current, completely certain that on the top of the mountain, in the spring, he will find whatever he’s always wanted. And hence he rows and rows, but simply can’t get there. Perhaps he’s gotten lost, perhaps he’s gotten tired. But nonetheless he rows, year in, year out. Until one day, motivated by his pain, he decides to throw himself in the water and simply let the current carry him down. Whatever led him to take this decision, is open to interpretation.
